Sprache, in dem der
Wortschatz des Englischen seit dem 12.
Jahrhundert systematisch erfasst und mit chronologisch geordneten Zitaten belegt ist. Begonnen 1859 von der Philological Society in London, zunächst unter der
Leitung von
Herbert Coleridge (* 1830, ✝ 1861) und F. J.
Furnivall, wurde das Werk maßgeblich gestaltet von J. A. H. Murray (
Herausgeber 1879-1915) und erschien 1884-1928 unter dem Titel »A new English dictionary on historical principles« (10 Bände, dazu ein Supplementband, 1933). Die ebenfalls 1933 erschienene überarbeitete Neuauflage des Gesamtwerks (12 Bände und ein Supplementband) trug den Titel »The Oxford English Dictionary«. 1972-86 wurde ein vierbändiges Supplement veröffentlicht (Herausgeber R. W. Burchfield). Die zweite Auflage des OED (20 Bände) erschien 1989 (Herausgeber J. A.
Simpson und E. S. C. Weiner); sie liegt auch als CD-ROM vor.
